Online Ad Revenue Hits $8.4 B in Q1

Online advertising is growing – and shows little sign of slowing down.

According to the Interactive Advertising Bureau PricewaterhouseCoopers, Internet ad revenue hit $8.4 billion for the first quarter of the year – a new record (for the reporting period) that represents a 15% increase year-over-year.

The growth rate comes after a strong close to 2011, with online ad spending hitting nearly $9 billion in the fourth quarter – up 20.4% from 2010 and 14.7% from the previous quarter.

Search advertising saw a 27% increase to $14.8 billion, and remains the largest player in the space – claiming 46.5% of online ad spend.

According to MediaPost, the strong growth is attributed to various reasons, “from improved delivery and platform technologies to better content and greater consumer familiarity.”

The continued success of online advertising is undeniable. According to Sherrill Mane, SVP of Research, Analytics and Measurement at the IAB, “Digital media captures consumers’ imaginations, and marketers increasingly turn to interactive advertising to successfully speak to their consumers.’
