Artifical intelligence is exactly that: intelligence demonstrated by machines. Coined in 1956 at the Dartmouth Conference, AI has taken on more popularity today as advancements in computer technology and data volumes have taken center stage.
Although Hollywood movies and sci-fi novels have depicted AI as a man-killing robot poised to take over the world, the reality is that AI is not that scary. It actually provides many benefits to almost every industry imaginable. Here are just a few examples of AI in real life that are making things better for all of us:
Medicine: AI can predict heart attacks and strokes by scanning routine medical data to predict which patients would have strokes or heart attacks within 10 years. The AI system beat out the standard method of prediction, making 355 more correct calls than traditional means. So let’s stop saying that the robots are coming to kill us:)
Beer: Yup, that’s right. AI is helping to brew beer. The company IntelligentX is using AI to help brewers test and incorporate consumer feedback by using a “bot” designed to learn from customer feedback. Just don’t try to blame the robots on your hangover.
Work: Clarke.ai wants you to stop taking notes in meetings and start paying attention. The AI joins your meeting as just another participant (using your own calendar invite), listens in to record and analyze the conversation, and then outlines the call and emails you the notes.
Marketers are on an endless quest to understand the true value of each action that a prospect or customer takes, in hopes of addressing each person accordingly.
Without AI, marketers know current predictive characteristics. We can know someone’s gender, income, age, and shopping preferences. But with AI, we get a real-time, dynamic understanding of people that can determine motivations, actions they are likely to take, and when they will take them. With AI, our ability to differentiate and understand the true value of an opportunity is never as good as it is today. When we let AI take over time invasive tasks and improve our decisioning, we in turn allow marketers to be more strategic and creative.
