Our Ann Arbor office set up an office book club in 2010 and has been enjoying engaging monthly discussions ever since. Our New York office had aspirations of starting one as well, and 4 fearless leaders emerged to jump start the project.
Four ladies in the office are avid book readers who brought the idea to life in NYC. They had their first meeting one evening last month in the awesome new office lounge. Much like the early Ann Arbor book club, the concept is simple. A member picks the book each month, everyone has a chance to read it before the next scheduled meeting, and then we all gather to discuss over snacks and beverages. As the Ann Arbor club grew they adjusted the selection format a bit to better engage all members. At the end of each meeting all members nominate and vote for the next book in an effort to keep more members motivated to complete each book month after month.
Ann Arbor has read about 60 books over the years, and named a recent read, Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy, as the most discussed. This title topped TIME’s top 10 books of all-time list in 2007, and had been on the “to read” list for most members. All readers were thrilled to finally cross this difficult book off their lists and a lively discussion ensued.
NYC kicked off their club with How to Talk to a Widower by Jonathan Tropper. They took cues from discussion questions online to serve as a base, but mostly chatted about their favorite parts and who they’d cast in the movie version of the book.
